I was told I could take other courses in my local community college before I leave for Culinary Art school next year. Does anyone know what courses are recommended? Or does anyone have any suggestions on what courses to take to further extend my knowledge on running a restaurant?

BEFORE WORRYING ABOUT HAVING YOUR OWN RESTAURANT, CONCENTRATE ON ALL THE EDUCATIONAL AVENUES THAT YOU HAVE MENTIONED,THEN YOU WILL BE COMPLETELY PREPARED.

What percentage does a restaurant owner make in profit?

Author: admin  //  Category: restaurant owner

Im interested in starting a Subway franchise, Im not asking for advice so dont give it im just wondering on what kind of percentage im looking at, also i know that there is not one magical number I know it varies with labor cost, food cost etc. But what kind of percentage is common, ten points for the best answer thanks

Subway is tough. On the good side they have great brand awareness, relatively low food and labor costs and a great system. On the bad side they have very high royalty and advertising fees. They also have very small territories and in some areas they are cannibalizing themselves.

Subway boasts that most of the new units are opened by existing owners. That's probably because it takes 4 stores to make any money.

The problem with Subway is that they are so big people think they must be doing something right. They're also very cheap and easy to open relative to other restaurant franchises.

If it were me I'd check into some of the newer players. I'm not sure but I would guess that a single Subway would gross $25,000/mo. That's low. Check for one that grosses $40k to $50k per month.

Typically franchise restaurants will have 30% food costs, 30% labor, 10% rent, 10% other fixed expenses, 5-10% royalty and adv. fees and 10-15% profit.

Getting into the Restaurant Business this time of year?

Author: admin  //  Category: restaurant business

I was going to get a job in the restaurant business as a busser and work up to a waiter, but it seems like everything will slow down here in seattle right about now and it is on the water so all of the deck traffic will be gone so maybe i should right it off to slow season or is it?

What makes you think that the end of summer is the slow
season? And do you think that seattlites don't eat out when
it is raining? If people stayed home when it rains there would
be no one on the streets LOL.
Seriously, restaurants are about the only service that doesn't
slow down. Everyone eats out in Seattle on occasion. And
with the population, there's sure to be full houses on any
given night. Especially with those single's who eat out after
having a drink before going home after work. I don't think
that business every suffers if the place has good food and
good service.

Is it true there is a successful British restaurant in Manhatten run by a famous chef?

I can't believe people would pay to go to a British restaurant run by a British chef in a city where there are so many choices of cuisine…

Question is- is there any good Brit cooking ?

If you buy a restaurant do you still need to pay rent to someone?

Author: admin  //  Category: buying a restaurant

A friend of mine says that you do.. he says that his mom was going to buy a small restaurant for $20,000 and then she would have to pay $3000 a month in rent to the owner of the land or something like that? Maybe is this true if you buy a space in a shopping center? But if you buy a freestanding restaurant its not ?

you need to understand two simple parts here;

a business is a business. restaurant, auto repair, hair salon, etc.

real estate is real estate.

if someone buys a property that has a for sale restaurant within it
they get two things. If they buy only a restaurant, they have a lease
to pay “forever.” THE ideal thing to do is get a lease-option when
one buys a business. that way, when the business is making good
money, they can for a set price, buy the building they are operating within.

UNTIL THEN, when anyone buys a restaurant, they must
negotiate separately for the building and land.

IF the biz has a long lease, often, the new owner needs only
to inform the landlord and continue paying on the lease.

every biz i know for sale of has data on the lease of the building.

Which is the best Israeli cookbook?

Author: admin  //  Category: restaurateur

I found the most wonderful Israeli cookbook at the Baltimore Public Library a few years ago, and neglected to write down the title or the ISBN number…
It contained HUNDREDS of recipes, some from Israel's best restaurateurs and chefs.
I have looked everywhere and unfortunately I cannot seem to find it…

Does anyone know about this book or about a similar book?
Do you have a favorite Israeli cookbook?

Good morning Israel

A while back I found this wonderful cookbook in london, it's by Ruth Sirkis, it explains how to make a variety of Israeli dishes, my husband and children love the Israeli dishes I made.

I want to start a big restaurant Where/how do i get the money and make it come true?

Author: admin  //  Category: start restaurant

I want to start a really big and great restaurant. I've figured with land to develop, the building, supplies, decor, food, salary, etc. I would need about 2 to 4 million to start. Currently I don't know of a way to get that kind of money, so I've been hoping i win the lottery- besides that, does anyone else have an idea as to where i can get that kind of money?( I think the highest business loan given is 100,000)

You need to get out their on your hands and knees man. Paint rocks and sell them to your neighbors as paperweights. Do whatever you have to do for the dream

I would like an advice on my life, need to make a choice so I need opinions to see what I might not see

Author: admin  //  Category: restaurant startup

Well I am 23 years old now, did one semester of Law, on in Translation, and I am back in America after a trip in Asia for more than a year.

Of course I had a great time there, and I was not only partying all the time, far from that actually, having fun, of course, but also looking for factories for importexport, that is why I wish to go back there, and to have a business that I would grow over time, something like a restaurant, hotel or lounge, and to keep good cashflow I would go back Canada to work about half the year until I dont need to come back,

yet, I will not have a degree,

maybe a useless degree, maybe a good safenet. I would chose Administration, even though it is admitted I have big inner sense of business since an early age

I can speak and read 3 asian languages and understand 1 more, hence the translation school before I left. And it really makes me think how possible it is to go live there

Of course I do not wish to live like a poor local, but I have more than enough money for a startup, or the equivalent of 5 years of what I spent when I was there, well, more than enough

I wish I could do that but I am not sure if it is any good for long-term, but it sure is easy to find a summerjob at around 15$ an hour, and also enjoy the great quality of life and climate over there, I dont have much link with family, that is why I feel so free, but at the same time,

Maybe I am lazy, I dont know, but I dont know if I have the big motivation to do studies right now, and it saddens me because in the end I am sure I would have a great feeling of accomplishment.

So a choice to make, a difficult one, since it will have big consequences, but I dont need someone to make the choice for me, but just what the average yahoo! answerer thinks of that, and entering the big 10 points contest.
um wow thank you so much you two, actually i did not hear that kind of thing for quite some time since «You cant decently live if you dont have a degree» my friends say (They got Masters and all so I understand they took the Safe Way to do things) but yeah no much ties, I just worry about the longevity of that, yeah I am more ambitious than having a 15$ per hour job all my life but what is the cost of quality of life eh ? In the long-run, there might be doubts, but I would have done something about admission for University if I had the motivation I guess no?

I think following your heart is more important than a degree. If you follow something you are passionate about you are bound to be more of a success than following a path you feel you must. If you find you need a degree later what is stopping you from going back to school then?

When you think about it the decision isn’t that great, because of the fact there is no decision you make that you can’t unmake or fix later on. so if you can go back and get a degree later what is stopping you following your heart now?

Pain – Common Foods Can Start Migraine Attacks

Author: admin  //  Category: start restaurant

Migraine headaches do not just drop out of the sky on some poor person. If you are suffering from migraine headaches, there are probably physical causes behind your condition, and there are steps you can take tavoid the frequent recurrence of the headaches. Some of the food that you are eating may in fact be the “trigger” that sets off your migraine attack, and it is helpful to know which common foods are known to start migraine headaches.

Before I go into a discussion about the kinds of foods that often cause migraine headaches, it is important to understand that food alone is not the only factor associated with migraine attacks. Other contributors include stress, hormones, emotional factors and even some medications. In addition, some foods that trigger migraines in one person, may not affect another person. That said let’s take a look at the commonest kinds of food associated with the onset of migraine attacks.
The foods which can cause difficulty include the following:

• peanuts and peanut butter
• caffeine in all products, not just coffee
• dairy products
• yeast
• some beans (which includes peanut), as well as broad, lima , Italian, lentil, soy, peas
• avocados
• dried meats
• sauerkraut
• pickled herrings
• canned soups and packet soup mixes
• chicken livers
• ripe banana
• soy products as well as the bean itself
• sodium nitrate, which is used to preserve hot dogs, bacon and cured meats
• the preservative benzoic acid and its associated compounds
• MSG, common name for monosodium glutamate, a flavor enhancer which is now in almost universal use in almost all processed foods
• nuts
• sourdough breads
• cheeses which have been aged
• red wines, beer, champagne, vermouth
• chocolate
• anchovies

If the list above seems depressingly long, the good news is that most of the items in this list come from highly processed and manufactured food products. These foods aren’t too difficult to identify, test, and eliminate from your diet. You just have to pay attention when shopping, when preparing food and when sitting down to eat your meal.

Hold the Cheese Please!

If you are a cheese lover, and you also are susceptible to migraines, then you have to pay attention to what kinds of cheese you eat. Aged cheeses are high in tyramine, a substance that forms during the breakdown of protein. The longer cheese ages, the greater the tyramine content becomes. If you sensitive to tyramine then these are the cheeses that you should avoid:

• Blue cheeses
• Brie
• Cheddar
• Stilton
• Feta
• Gorgonzola
• Mozzarella
• Muenster
• Parmesan
• Swiss
• Processed cheese

Cheese is not the only food that has high tyramine levels. Other foods high in tyramine include processed meats, pickles, onions, olives, certain types of beans, raisins, nuts, avocados, canned soups, and red wine.

Doctors concede it can be difficult to avoid all of these foods. Nestor Galvez-Jimenez, MD, a neurologist with The Cleveland Clinic in Florida, says some of his tyramine-sensitive patients find it difficult to avoid foods that are on the “stop list,” especially wine. “They want to drink wine even if they know it will give them a headache. In that case, I recommend a preventive dose of medication before dinner.” He adds that patients should discuss this idea with their doctors before trying it.

Avoid Additives

Whenever you buy processed foods it is important to read the labels carefully because several food additives, such as nitrites, food colorings and artificial sweeteners, are also common headache triggers. Doctors are not 100% sure why these additives can trigger migraines but suspect that they increase the flow of blood to the brain and bring about changes in blood vessels.

Unlike other migraines which are triggered by a food substance and are felt on one side of the head, headaches induced by additives or other substances are usually sensed on both sides of the head. In addition, additive-triggered migraines usually occur within a specific time after taking the additive and they disappear when the additive is eliminated or within a specific time thereafter.

Monosodium glutamate-induced headaches, sometimes known as Chinese restaurant syndrome, occur within an hour after ingestion of MSG and can cause at least two of the following symptoms:

• Pressure in the chest or face
• Burning sensation in the chest, neck, or shoulders
• Dizziness
• Abdominal discomfort

MSG is not only found in Chinese food but is used as a flavor enhancer in a wide variety of snacks and other manufactured foods, so once again it is important to read the labels carefully when shopping for your household groceries or even when grabbing a quick snack.

As I mentioned in the beginning, the ingestion of specific foods is not the only cause of migraine attacks, and the foods that trigger these attacks vary from person to person. However, if you are suffering from frequent migraine headaches then it makes sense to consult your physician and to do your best to eliminate the foods that may be contributing to your discomfort. Starting a Business you Need a Plan

Author: admin  //  Category: restaurant startup

One morning you might wake up and like a ton of bricks a great idea for creating and starting your online business comes to mind, and you hadn’t a doubt in your mind that you could turn it into a huge success. Start with the end in mind. Are you planning to start a new business? If you find a viable business you like, document your intentions, intended deal structure and what exact information you need to start your purchase due diligence.

Many small businesses start with a business plan based on guesses. The idea for you business plan comes to mind, its time to start the new business and you are all ready to go but the only problem is that you need money, so it is time to find the investors, angel investors and you will need to show them your business plan.

If you plan to jump into the fray, however, the first step is to create a solid business plan. The business plan you create will be one of the most important documents in your new businesses. It doesn’t matter if your business is just getting started or it is an existing business, creating a business plan helps you understand your business.

If so, have you started writing your business plan yet. In all honestly, when writing anything, even a business plan, it is the wording that makes all the difference in the world. Writing a plan for your project requires you to have an idea and vision of the whole project, the component parts of the project and the operating system behind your project.

The world is full of business-minded individuals, whether their goals are to lead a multi-million dollar company into the future, or simply start their own small business to provide services that are in demand and services they enjoy performing. You will need a brief outline of your business, your mission statement, goals, balance sheet, income statement, projected cash flow and plan for unforeseen hindrances.

Therefore, it is very important for the potential business owner to spend as much time and effort preparing and creating a business plan as they do finding the perfect location and the best restaurant ovens. Show why potential customers will award business to you, rather than your competition. One page of your business plan can have the following information: it can contain the potential partners, employees, board of directors, and you can show where the business will be in future years.

Angel investors want you to succeed and often they also like to give their input and if you end up taking their money for your startup, the need to realize that their input needs to be taken seriously. One of the great myths is that you only need a Business Plan if you are going to borrow money from a bank. A business plan of a start up business making no money — for example — is going to be bigger than the ones that are running and making money already. The angel and VC investors, are risking their capital money when they invest in your business, they hope in the long run they will receive returns that is worth many times what they put in.
