Hell’s Kitchen is an American reality-television cooking competition, based on a series of the same name, broadcast in the UK. The program’s first season debuted in May 2005 with subsequent seasons debuting in June 2006, June 2007 and April 2008. On September 11, 2008, FOX announced that Hell’s Kitchen would return for a sixth and seventh season, along with the fifth announced earlier in the year. FOX also renewed Chef Ramsay’s other series, Kitchen Nightmares, for a third season; as well as picked up a new Gordon Ramsay series.

Season 5 of the American competitive reality television series Hell’s Kitchen began airing on the Fox Network starting on January 29, 2009. This season was filmed back-to-back in 2007 with season 4. The winner will be employed at the Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa in Atlantic City, New Jersey with a $250,000 salary.

Gordon James Ramsay is a chef, television personality and restaurateur. He has been awarded a total of 14 Michelin Stars, and in 2007 became one of only three chefs in the United Kingdom to hold three Michelin stars at one time. Ramsay currently ranks 3rd in the world in terms of Michelin Stars behind Joel Robuchon and Alain Ducasse.

I found a bar/restaurant that I would really like to work at. I currently have a full time job that I might lose and I want to start getting some experience doing something else. Idealy, I would like to stay at least part-time at my current job and sort of moonlight as a cocktial waitress. I also go to college 3/4 time so working at night would actually be better for me.

I don’t have any waiting or food service experience. I do have retail experience, I’m a keyholder at my current job and I’m hoping that will look good on an application/ possibly a resume.

I would really really really like to work at this place and I want to know what I can do to better my chances!?!?

One of my old teachers at hotel school always used to say that he could "teach a smiler to be a waitress but he couldn’t teach a waitress to smile". If you have got the right attitude that is a great start, the rest can be taught . You might have to start out washing dishes or bussing tables but if you are good you won’t be doing it for long, you already have experience dealing with customerswhichh is another mark in your favour so go for it, you’ve got nothing to lose.

She heard a loud whisper: “Screw the Mexicans!”

For somebody who loves food, the prospect of giving up a 9am to 5pm office job and spending all their working life developing new menus may seem irresistible. Sadly, although thousands of people have ventured down the route to becoming a restaurateur, the success rate is low. Estimates vary, but it is generally reckoned that about three quarters of all new restaurants are not a success and close within three years of opening. Large corporate restaurant chains generally succeed better, and it is the sole trader that is particularly likely to face problems. Instead of experimenting with new recipes for beef bourguignon or duck a l’orange, the small restaurant owner is likely to spend much of their time on more mundane matters. Filling out the VAT return, recruiting staff, calculating their income tax and paying their National Insurance contributions, keeping abreast of new legislation concerning minimum wage levels, maternity leave, and disabil¬ity discrimination are all distractions from the kitchen. Then there is the never-ending task of promoting the restaurant. Many restaurateurs think that customers will beat a path to their door, but diners can be fickle, and, as soon as a new restaurant opens in town, they may be off to try it out.

With so much to do in simply running the business, it is not surprising that many small restaurateurs become disillusioned and move on. Some fail simply because they haven’t developed a realistic business plan. Many of these could have benefited by belonging to a franchise organization, rather than going it alone. In franchised systems, the franchiser typically provides valuable support for administrative and promotional matters, leaving the franchisee to develop their business. The Domino’s Pizza Group has used the energy of talented and hard-working indi¬viduals to deliver good financial rewards to its franchisees. Although the company’s pizzas may not appeal greatly to people who love fine food, its approach to the franchising of food outlets generally offers much more security and profitability than going it alone. In 2004, Domino’s reported that ten of its 100-plus UK and Ireland franchisees owned businesses that were worth more than £1,000,000 each. These figures are based on a standard calculation of twice annual turnover. With an average start-up cost of £183,000 this is a significant return on franchisees’ initial investment. How many sole traders running their own restaurant could match this? In 2002, Domino’s franchisees earned around £120,000 a year on average (although some considerably more), which was more than three times the average income of a typical business manager (£38,1071). Further¬more, no Domino’s franchise failed during the year, compared with over 22,000 business failures elsewhere in the UK economy.

Typical of the hard-working individuals attracted to a Domino’s franchise was James Swift. As a 16-year-old delivery driver for Domino’s Pizza, Swift spotted the potential to run his own business at an early age. He soon secured a position as the manager of the Domino’s branch in Swindon. This operational experience was critical for learning everything from how to make a pizza to how to manage a big team. It was about three years later that he got the chance to buy a share in the franchise. By the age of 24, he had become co-franchisee of three Domino’s outlets in Swindon, Newbury and Bath. History of Modern French

Both French and English started in European countries. French is a “Romance” language, which means its origins lie in the ancient Roman Empire. Latin was the language of the Roman Empire, but since the Empire had such a vast reach, many areas developed their own dialects of the language, often mixed with the languages of the native people. When the area that is today known as France was invaded by Germanic tribes in the 400s, the language took on a decidedly Germanic flavor. The native tongue of the new governing body was mixed with the Latin the people were speaking to create a new dialect, decidedly Latin, but with Germanic pronunciations.

As the Germanic tribes maintained control of the area, the language digressed further from Latin and became its own distinct tongue. This required the language to be codified, or written, so that political and legal process could take place much easier. The language was named “French” for the Frankish people that lived in the area where it was predominantly spoken. French became the official language of the new country in 1539 by the Edict of Villers Cotterets. The grammar of the language has remained relatively the same since the early 1600s, which is when the language was standardized by the French Academy. Today it is the official language of 22 countries, and the co-official language of many others, including Canada, Switzerland, Madagascar, and Belgium.

History of Modern English

English is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. A truly global language, it is the language of finance, technology, and diplomacy. This is surprising in light of the fact that the language originated on the tiny island of Great Britain.

The English language is not a Romantic language like French. Because the island was isolated from the Roman Empire, it was not influenced as heavily by Latin as the inland languages were. However, French and English share one main commonality, and that is the influence of invading Germanic tribes.

While different tribes invaded England than invaded France, they spoke similar languages. Prior to the Germanic invasion, the people of Great Britain spoke a Celtic language. However, the Germanic people spoke a language that eventually developed into Old English. This was the language spoken on the island until 1100.

In 1066, France and England’s histories overlapped, when the William the Conqueror, the Duke of Normandy, conquered the island and brought French to the land. While the people did not speak France, the government did, and the language began to influence the language of the common people, eventually developing into Middle English, a combination of French and Old English. This gradually developed into Modern English, the language that is spoken today, and the invention of the printing press made it possible to unify and standardize the language.

A friend had gone to the Printers Row Bookfair in Chicago earlier this month and had looked for the Printers Row Cafe, which was an upscale bistro located on Dearborn and Harrison (I think). She said she was unable to locate it however, and said the neighborhood has changed a lot in the 10 years since we had been to the fair. Did it move, go out of business, or was it sold to another restaurateur? Bonus points if you can tell me more about what’s happened to the neighborhood. There was a Hyatt Hotel on that block, which I understand was turned into condos, a small jazz club across the street, and two bookstores in the area, one specializing in local authors. Are those still around?
Thank goodness, Sandmeyers’ Books and Printers’ Row Rare Books are still there! But I thought the Hyatt chain sold the building to condo developers. Am I wrong?

The neighborhood has undergone dramatic changes in the past few years. Many, many condos, lofts, townhomes have been built to go with the new restaurants and boutiques. Even our mayor resides a few blocks south of Harrison St. I believe that the Hyatt is still at 500 S. Dearborn St. The following link may help.
