why do some police leave their car running while going inside a restaurant or store?

There are four reasons:
1. Keep it warm in the winter, running the heater.
2. Keep it cool in the summer, running the A/C.
3. Because the starter is about shot and they might not get that old, tired rolling junk heap to start again.
4. To keep power running to their car radio because if they turn it off and leave the radio on, the battery gets sucked dry.

If they are receive a call, they need to quickly get to the scene asap. By leaving it on, the engine is already running. No delays.

Well, lets see – first of all, we, the taxpayers pay for the gas they use, and the cars, and their uniforms, guns, etc. – secondly – who’s going to steal a police car – only the dumbest of criminals.

Everyone pretty much hit on all of them. My squad has three radios, a radar unit and a computer. All of these have to be on when I am out on patrol.
Most Officers will leave the car running to go into a convenience store for a small item but will shut it down when on lunch break.

I almost never do unless I’m hopping out for something important, even then I lock the doors. I carry 3 keys with me so it’s easy to get back in.
