Is it possible to start a restaurant on a shoestring?

Author: admin  //  Category: start restaurant

I think the question says it all, limited finances, what is the minimum I would need (considering I must buy all equipment and rent the space). Anyone who has successfully done so, how did you? Any suggestions from anyone?

My parents opened a restaurant a couple of years ago. It was a small place, and they spent tens of thousands of dollars. This was in a space they leased that was already equipped for restaurant equipment. If it hadn’t been, it would have been tens of thousands more. Besides the equipment and space, there is the food of course, licenses, training your employees before you open, insurance, etc.

No it is not possible to open on a shoestring. It is not like you can start small selling hot dogs from a box on the back of your bike. There are all sorts of hoops to jump through for the health and fire departments that will most likely require additional improvements to the flooring and plumbing – along with the purchase of restaurant equipment – expensive even when used. The shoestring part could put you in a loss situation before you are even able to open the doors.

Don’ t buy anything you don’t nave to. Lease everything you can. You should probably work in another restaurant to learn the business. The fact that you are asking these questions says you don’t have the experience yet.

Restaurants are the worst business to get into. Go look for a small restaurant you visited 5 or 10 years ago. Is it still there? Probably not.
